Class Syllabus
Profesor: Mr. Soudack Room:M21 aviam.soudack@cojowa.edu.co
Welcome to our Math 7 class! Over the course of the school year we will explore our text “Glencoe Pre-algebra”. I will provide copies of all the extra materials that you will need in this class. The time we spend together will become a meaningful opportunity for you to build useful tools for early Algebra. This course is designed to prepare each student for the following Algebraic concepts; integers, rational numbers, solving equations, linear equations, functions, rates and ratios, proportions, probability and polynomials. We will also work on strengthening your confidence in discrete math concepts; logical reasoning, word problems, geometry and start to build on algebraic math vocabulary.
Although Mathematics seems like a complicated subject, fear not because we will review the basic tools of Algebra and clearly introduce new ideas. These tools will become useful when we integrate them in class and start to make connections to our daily lives. Math spans many disciplines and is an essential topic. As new discoveries arise we shall apply them, improving our bilingual learning environment. I will provide exciting activities and integrate available technology in order to enhance your class experience. I know that if you are determined to work hard, you will accomplish many feats this upcoming school year!
Grading System
Final examination (quarter review)………………………………………………………………15%
Tests (chapters)……………………………………………………………………………………………30%
Classwork/Assignments/Projects……………………………………………………………20%
Quizzes (paired, pop, weekly)………………………………………………………………………20%
Homework…………………………………………………………………………………………………15%
Expectations
In my class you are expected to hand work in on time, be punctual, come prepared and willing to learn, and play a role in class/group discussions. Everyone has what it takes to be successful; however it’s entirely up to YOU to succeed. I merely play the role as the facilitator providing the tools and guiding you through the process.
The main objective of COJOWA is to develop student’s fluency in English. However, we are primarily a bilingual institution so I will also give you opportunities to communicate in Spanish. I will always be available after school on Tuesdays for extracurricular work, additional help and make-up for absences during test and assignments.
Our Social Contract
Classroom Rules
The rules of our classroom are the same as those provided in your student handbook and our MS-wide disciplinary staff book. If these rules are broken they will result in lunch detention and possible suspension. These school guidelines are in place in order to create a safe and cooperative learning environment.
The following actions will NOT be tolerated under any circumstances in my classroom:
- Conduct that endangers the safety of staff or students (verbal and physical abuse, bullying, throwing objects, damaging school property etc…) -Everyone is equal
- Plagiarized/copied work will immediately be referred to administration and cheating will not be tolerated at this school (remember the use of internet is a privilege)
- Cell phones or other electronic items are strictly forbidden, unless specified in-class assignments, they will immediately become my property! (the office retains the right to return cellphones the following day)
- Coming to class late/tardy and unprepared without necessary materials (text, journal, handouts, appropriate materials, etc…)
- Unexcused absences. (This includes no make up for tests, quizzes and assignments)
- Purposefully talking over or disturbing while someone else is explaining an idea
Pre-algebra Learning Objectives students will be able to:
- Begin to learn basic algebraic concepts by investigating Integers, Inequalities & Functions
- Understand Rational Numbers, Rates, Ratios, Proportions and simple Polynomials
- Strengthen algebraic concepts in our approach to Exponents and Factoring
- Develop a stronger knowledge of the relationships between decimals, fractions, and percent
- Improve grasp of Probability and statistics
- Apply current mathematic knowledge in daily life, integrate available technology & introduce computation skills, and build a variety of reasoning skills in order to solve word problems
